I use Cakewalk Sonar digital audio workstation (DAW) software which allows me to record one instrument at a time.
Typically, I fiddle around with a drum beat a while until I work one out that I like. Cakewalk comes with a built in Synth with some decent drum sounds that I can use on a MIDI track until I get the rhythm that I like. But there are alot nicer ones out there that I'm looking at such as Superior Drummer 2.0 (

Before it was stolen, I used the my guitar on a couple of tracks. Guitar was usually the next set of tracks that I'd work out once I had a beat that I liked. Occasionally, the guitar riff would be in my head when I put the drums together, but not always. For me, it's always been easier to have a drum track playing while I mess around with guitar mod settings (using my Line 6 guitar USB interface software) and work on a guitar rhythm that I like the sound of.
All of the other sounds are straight MIDI tracks using either the built-in Synth software in Sonar, or the trial Native Instruments KORE plug-in.
I have about half a dozen other music bits that I've worked on since I did these two that I'll put up this week or weekend. A couple I did for Sandi for her new podcast which I guess I'm producing for her using my software, and a couple that I just goofed around with while learning some of the software settings.
I sure miss my guitar, though. I hope to pick up a new and vastly improved one (either
