Arma II : DayZ mod

Arma II : DayZ mod

Postby DogRobber » Mon Jun 25, 2012 10:18 am

I think this mod came up in another forum, but as it's getting some traction, I thought I'd start a thread here.
And also, I played it, so I'm being my usual self serving self. ;)

Apparently the mod is so popular that the developer has patched the game to better support the mod, and the mod is already been tested for Arma III. It probably helps that the mod was developed by an employee of Bohemia Interactive.

I discovered that if I owned Arma II on Steam, which I do, I could just buy Arma II: Operation Arrowhead and Steam would combine the two games logically into Arma II: Combined Operations. Which, is what is needed to install the DayZ mod.

Here's how that's done real quick (in Windows 7 which is my experiance). First, you have to launch Steam as a local administrator and start Arma II at least once. I played it for a couple of minutes just to make sure that the voodoo happened. Then, you can buy Arma II: Operation Arrowhead in Steam (It should still be running as adminstrator, but if you're unsure, quit Steam and restart it under that context) and install it. Steam will still show both games in your Library, but they'll be configured as Combined Operations which you can see when you launch Operation Arrowhead and see both game tags at the bottom of the menu screen.

Or, if you don't own either, you can just buy Arma II: Combined Operations on Steam.

Installing the DayZ mod is as simple as installing Six Updater (http://www.six-updater.net/) which which will install the mod and also a server browser for the mod which makes things incredibly easy.

This game has been alot of fun, now that I've figured out some of the basics.
For example, buildings that you can enter (and search for useful items) typically have a broken window or two that you can see into. Buildings that you can't enter have sort of glazed grey looking windows.
Deer stands also have a higher chance of containing a weapon.
Weapons are good.

I'm hoping to do a survivor series of Youtube videos on the game soon. I just need to fix a Fraps issue that I'm having with sound.

I have seen that people are having trouble getting on servers. Have you had this issue.

Not at all.
I am using SixLauncher to play the game, though.
It looks like there are about 2x the number of Seattle servers to any other US location, which is probably helping me out a ton.
Looking at the server list now, I'm seeing tons of Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, and then a bunch scattered around.
Your character persists across servers, so the servers are managed a bit differently then most shooters, I'm guessing that might cause some slot issues.
I haven't had any, though.
I favorited 2 or 3 servers and can usually get on one or two whenever.

Did you notice any Pittsburgh Pa, or Columbus Oh. servers?

I did not.
But the names are sort of funky on about half of them.
You'd probably want to just check your ping against the list.

Day Z is fun and getting away from the zombies is a challenge. But why is the inventory system so convoluted ? Is this a sim thing?

The inventory system is a hold over from Arma II.
There wasn't as much picking up and dropping in that game. Nor were there bags to transfer stuft to and from. So that piece is admittedly wonky.
You do get use to it pretty quickly, though.
;) Thanks for the video idea, though.
